OEM vs ODM vs stock program: which quote are you actually looking at?
An OEM, ODM and stock-product quote can look comparable while committing you to three different levels of design control, tooling cost and production risk.
What to check before you decide
- Ask whether the factory is producing your supplied specification, adapting its own design, or selling an unchanged catalogue item.
- Separate one-time tooling, artwork, sampling, packaging and testing from the unit price.
- Confirm who owns drawings, molds and approved samples after payment.
Keep the buying decision controlled
Start with one written brief: the product or service required, the buyer's target market, the commercial decision to make and the person who can approve the next step. Compare supplier answers against that same brief, keep versions of specifications and quotations together, and record each open point with an owner and date. This approach makes remote work, a China visit and a later inspection part of one evidence trail rather than separate conversations.
The mistake to avoid
The common mistake is treating a low stock-program price as proof that a custom OEM request is inexpensive. Put the production model in the quotation heading before comparing suppliers.
